Woman chain snatcher held
A 25-year-old woman who tried to snatch a gold chain from a woman in Perambur on Monday afternoon was caught by members of the public. Police sources said the accused Shanti of Puducherry had tried to snatch a three sovereign chain from N.Shanti (56), a resident of Ambedkar Nagar, Kolathur, when she disembarked from an MTC bus at Venus Colony, Permabur. The victim, her daughter and daughter-in-law were on their way to a relative's house in the neighbourhood.
When the chain snatching attempt was made, the victim and her relatives caught hold of the accused and raised an alarm attracting the attention of passersby. Shanti was handed over to the Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar police, who arrested her. The gold chain was also handed over to the police.
Woman kills self
A 28-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by slitting her throat with a broken glass bottle at her house in T.Nagar early on Monday.
Police said the victim was suffering from mental illness. Mambalam police sources identified the victim as Mahalakshmi, a resident of Varadharajan Street, T.Nagar.
Around 5 a.m. on Monday, Sakthivel and the children were woken up by the cries of Mahalakshmi who was lying on the bed with her throat slit and a broken bottle in her hand. Sakthivel along with some relatives staying nearby rushed Mahalakshmi to the Government Royapettah Hospital where doctors pronounced her as brought dead, sources added.
Two unidentified men on a motorcycle snatched a gold chain from a woman on Ormes Road, Kilpauk, on Sunday.
According to Kilpauk police sources, the incident occurred around 8.30 p.m. when Ponni (40) of Purusawalkam and her husband were going to a marriage hall in the area to attend a wedding reception. The suspects rode close to the couple and snatched the five sovereign chain from Ponni and sped away, sources added.
Burglars struck at a house in Otteri on Saturday afternoon and decamped with cash totalling Rs.45,000.
Police sources said the burglary took place at the residence of Madasami (62) on Padavattaman Koil Street when he and his family members had gone out to a relative's house.
They returned on Saturday night to find the main door lock broken and the money kept in a safe missing, sources added.
