Robbed woman dies

Within an hour of robbery of cash totalling Rs.10,000, an octogenarian woman died of shock on Wednesday afternoon. According to Government Railway Police (GRP), Korukkupet, P. Annammal (80) of Sathuma Nagar, Tiruvottiyur, was returning home after visiting her daughter in Minjur. She was sitting on a bench at the Minjur railway station when two men snatched her cloth bag containing Rs.10,000 and fled.

The incident occurred around 1.45 p.m. and Annammal fell from the bench and some bystanders and railway staff rushed to her assistance. They took her to a private hospital nearby where she died. The GRP arrested Nanda Kumar (36) of Ennore and Velu (26) of Gummidipoondi on Thursday on charges of robbing the woman.


Five men in an inebriated state assaulted a 22-year-old man in Velachery on Wednesday resulting in his death. Velachery police arrested four of five accused.

Police said the group, including Manoharan (49), Vijayakumar (52), Ramesh (41), Muthumari (41) and Kutti (39), all employees of a hotel in Velachery, teased Mariappan alias Mallu, working in a teashop in Dhandeeshwaram, when he walked passed them at 3.45 p.m.

When Mariappan confronted the five men, they assaulted and left him near a pond in Dhandeeshwaram. Passerby spotted Mallu's body and informed the police, sources said.

Following investigations, Manoharan, Vijayakumar, Ramesh and Muthumari were arrested on Thursday morning. Kutti is absconding, sources added.

Man robbed

In a case of theft by diverting attention, a 51-year-old man lost Rs.3.9 lakh to an unidentified man in Pulianthope on Tuesday.

Thangaraj, a resident of Pulianthope, runs a grocery store near his house. On Tuesday afternoon, he closed his fixed deposit account with a nationalised bank on Perambur Barracks Road and was returning home with the money.

Thangaraj kept the money in the side-box of his motorcycle. On the way he stopped his vehicle after he felt a burning sensation on his back. While he was checking, an unidentified man offered some help and left immediately. Soon, Thangaraj found his side-box open and the cash missing, sources added.

Commits suicide

A police head constable allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his house in Maduravoyal on Wednesday.

Police identified the victim as P. Devadas (39), a jeep driver for Vadapalani police. Around 11 a.m., he had a heated argument with his wife . A disappointed Devadas went into his bedroom and when the door was forced open after some time he was found hanging from the ceiling fan, police said.

Man falls to death

A 41-year-old man died after he allegedly fell from the first floor of a building inside the Chennai harbour in the early hours on Wednesday.

Gandhi, a resident of Kanathur, on duty inside the harbour fell from the first floor of the Seamen Quarters in Royapuram. He suffered head injuries and died. Police recovered the body and sent it to Government Stanley Hospital for post-mortem.

TASMAC outlet burgled

Burglars broke into a TASMAC liquor outlet in Ramapuram in the early hours of Thursday and decamped with Rs.1.30 lakh in cash.

The burglary took place on Porur Trunk Road after the outlet was closed on Wednesday night. The culprits gained access into the shop after breaking open the front shutter lock and fled with cash.

Held for murder of wife

Police have arrested a 32-year-old man on charges of clubbing his wife to death on Wednesday. Lakshmi (26) and her husband Lingaraj (32) were residents of M.G.R Nagar in Kovilambakkam. The couple were reported to have frequent quarrel and they fought on Wednesday evening too. In a fit of rage, Lingaraj picked up an iron club and hit Lakshmi repeatedly.

She died at her home instantly. Police arrested Lingaraj.
