Three detained under Goondas Act

Three people who were involved in murder, attempt to murder, robbery and ‘katta panchayats' in Tiruchi and other districts were detained under the Goondas Act here on Friday on the orders of the Commissioner of Police E. Ma. Masanamuthu.

The trio – N. Duraisamy; C. Velmurugan and M. Vasudevan, all from Tiruchi, were arrested by a special police team in March in the city while conducting vehicle checks near check post 9.

Two cars; five sharp weapons and Rs. 1,000 were also seized from the trio who were remanded to judicial custody.

A police press release said 16 cases including murder had been registered against Duraisamy, while three attempt to murder cases had been registered against Vasudevan.

Velmurugan was an associate of the latter two and assistedthem in the execution of their crimes, the release added.

In separate incidents, the Tiruchi Rural police seized 55 pirated compact discs of latest films at Tiruverambur, Kollidam No. 1 Tollgate and Manapparai on Thursday. Four persons – K. Dhandapani S. Dinesh, P. Murugappan and P. Anandakumar were arrested on the charge of illegally possessing the pirated CDs and selling them.

Separate cases have been registered against them in Tiruverambur, Kollidam and Manapparai police stations, the police said.

Over 200 banned lottery tickets were seized by the police in Kollidam police station limit in the city's outskirts on Thursday.

Two persons – B. Sagayam and R. Balu were arrested on the charge of illegally possessing and selling the lottery tickets, the police said. A case has been registered at Kollidam police station, the police said.
