Collector K. Baskaran has appealed to officials to create awareness among public about the importance of getting birth and death certificates.

He held a meeting to discuss about issue of birth and death certificates with officials here on Tuesday.

Mr. Baskaran said that birth and death should be registered within 21 days of occurrence free of cost. If registered after 21 days and within 30 days a fine of Rs. 2 would be levied.

If registered in the time spanning 30 days to one year, it could be done by paying a fine of Rs. 4 and after one year the fine amount is Rs. 10.

Birth certificate is necessary during school admission, employment, and to get other certificates such as driving licence, passport, legal heir certificate and so on.

Death certificate was necessary for getting family pension and insurance benefits.
