Members of the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) on Wednesday observed a one day strike and staged a demonstration in the city seeking to create an authority for restoration of encroached lands and re-distribute the same to landless rural workers. The demonstrators pointed out that encroachments are in various manifestations. Similarly, several acres of lands had been acquired in the name of creating space for Special Economic Zones. Such encroachments have been accorded exemption from the Land Ceiling Act. The Special Authority to be formed should focus on restoration of encroachments and re-distribution of the same to rural workers in the form of five cents site and two acres for irrigation.
