Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA K. Balakrishnan observed a fast for about 11 hours in front of the Electricity Department office at Chidambaram on Thursday.

He ended the fast at 8 p.m. following assurances of the officials of TANGEDCO and Chidambaram Revenue Divisional Officer Indumathi that by Saturday evening, they would obtain a response on his demands from their higher-ups and convey it to him.

Mr Balakrishnan's demands are as follows: first, there should not be any power cut during night and to ensure such a situation the government should adopt austerity measures.

Second, the duration of power cut of three hours twice a day should be reduced to two hours each. Power cut should be implemented on rotational basis so that the schedule would change at periodical intervals.

Third, unscheduled power cuts should be totally dispensed with. Since these demands could be conceded at the regional level, he went on a hunger strike at Chidambaram.
