Cadre of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) took out a procession and staged a demonstration at Ambedkar Thidal here on Monday seeking house site pattas.

According to sources, washermen and hair dressers submitted petitions to the district administration seeking free house site pattas in 1989.

Pattas were distributed to 30 families of these two communities at the rate of 2.5 cents, spread over an acre.

None of them had the wherewithal to construct houses immediately.

In the meantime, the officials of the Department of Backward Classes constructed a hostel for students exactly at the same spot.

People tried their best to stop the construction but could not prevent it.

Now, the hostel was functioning there.

So, they sought pattas in an alternative place.

The secretary of the local unit of CPI(M), B. Anbuselvan, presided. The vice-president of the CITU’s district unit, R. Balasubramanian, spoke.
