Pandian urges Centre to issue stern warning to island nation

SALEM: The Communist Party of India will endorse any ‘radical action’ the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s High Level Policy Implementation Committee takes at its July17 meeting on the frequent attacks by Sri Lankan Navy on Indian fishermen, the party’s State secretary D. Pandian said here on Tuesday.

Talking to mediapersons, he said the CPI State executive had decided to stage a demonstration in front of the Sri Lankan High Commission in Chennai on July 30. Urging the Centre to issue a stern warning to the island nation, he said the Centre should not compromise on the country’s sovereignty and must step in to safeguard the rights and lives of Indian fishermen. Indian Coast Guard personnel should be deployed to provide security for them. Insisting that the rights of Indian fishermen on Kachatheevu island should be reasserted, the CPI leader pointed out that political parties and other forums should join hands to oppose the atrocities of the Sri Lankan Navy.

He urged Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to ensure that the families of missing fishermen were taken care of.
