CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the Archbishop, Puducherry – Cuddalore district, and others to take out the car procession carrying statues of Jabamalai Matha and St. Antony through streets where Dalit Christians reside in Eraiyur village of Villupuram district this month.

In his order on a petition by the Eraiyur village Dalit Christians, Ulundurpet, Justice D. Hariparanthaman said taking note of the fact that the respondents had taken out the procession in May last year through the streets where Dalit Christians resided, pursuant to an order of a lower court, he was inclined to give direction to do the same during this year's celebrations also.

The judge said it really shocked one's conscience that the statues were not taken through the streets where Dalit Christians resided. He was of the view that it amounted to practising untouchability, which was prohibited.
