A 68-year-old man was relieved of jewellery weighing 18 sovereigns in a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus near Tambaram on Monday.

Tambaram police said Chellappa had retired as a postman and was living in an apartment in Medavakkam. He and his wife had come to the mofussil bus stop in Perungalathur to see off some relatives. The couple then took an MTC bus and reached Tambaram. From there, they got into another MTC bus for Mandaveli to keep the jewellery in the safe deposit locker of a nationalised bank. It was then that Chellappa noticed that the cloth bag in which he had kept the jewellery was missing.

Held on rape charge

A doctor working in Chennai Port Trust was arrested on charges of raping his close relative.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Harbour) S. Radhakrishnan, a 25-year-old woman lodged a complaint that Dharaneeswaran (27) of Port Trust Officers' Quarters had forced her into a physical relationship after promising to marry her.
