A couple committed suicide here on Sunday allegedly owing to their inability to withstand the pressures from an usurer who fixed exorbitant interests for the loan they borrowed from him.

The deceased, Perumal (45) and Nirmala (38), killed themselves by hanging at their residence in M.S.Nagar. The Tirupur North police have registered a case under Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Rates.

100 cases

Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan told The Hindu that as many as 100 cases of charging exorbitant interests from the borrowers had been registered in the district during the last six months.

“We are going to strongly deal with people who harass the customers and force them to pay high rates of interests,” he said.

Lawyer missing

S. Appusamy (51), a lawyer from Ediyarpalayam, was reported missing. According to a complaint lodged by his relatives, Appusamy has gone to Bangalore a few days ago for some official purposes but did not return till now.

DVDs seized

The Udumalpet police seized 300 pirated DVDs of latest Tamil films during raids conducted on Saturday and Sunday. The police sources said S. Suresh and A.Abu, who were in possession of the DVDs at their musical shops, had been arrested. They were later remanded to judicial custody under Section 63 of Copy Rights Act.
