It relates to a theft of construction materials from a crematorium

ERODE: Erode Corporation Councillors on Wednesday petitioned Collector R. Sudalaikannan seeking action against Mayor K. Kumar Murugesh.

Led by AIADMK leader and Ward 17 Councillor Market N. Raja the Councillors asked the administration to initiate action against the Mayor, who, they said, misused his authority and “had a hand” in the recent theft of construction materials from the modern crematorium.

On October 23 a few persons acting at the behest of Mayor and his personal assistant Muthukumarasamy had removed construction materials that were stored at the crematorium, the Councillors said and added that they learnt about the incident from the crematorium watchman Mani.

They also told the Collector that though Mani had submitted a complaint to the Corporation Commissioner naming the Mayor’s P.A., he was asked to submit a second complaint without a mention of the name.

The Councillors alleged that Mayor Mr. Murugesh “coerced” the watchman to part with the second complaint and wanted to know whether Mr. Muthukumarasamys was mentioned in the complaint the Commissioner lodged with the Karungalpalayam police.

Subsequent to the complaint, 30 per cent of the stolen articles had been found at the crematorium, the Councillors said and wanted to know how the articles were replaced and who were behind the replacement.

They also told the Collector that the missing 70 per cent of the construction materials would be worth Rs. 10 lakh.

Mr. Raja and his MDMK and DMDK counterparts also charged the Mayor with financial misdemeanour in employees promotion, selection of beneficiaries for free colour television, etc. They sought for tabling a no-confidence motion against Mr. Murugesh. In all 14 Councillors were present when the Collector received the petition.
