The Corporation council meeting held here on Thursday witnessed something unusual with ruling party and opposition councillors displaying a ‘unity in diversity’ while criticising the overall apathy of Corporation officials in planning works and in its execution.

Communist Party of India councillor C. Rangasamy (ward 28) and DMK representative P. Chandra (ward 49) even threatened to quit the post if the administration continued to give a free hand to the officials as repair and infrastructure correction works were not carried out properly in their wards by the officials.

Councillors belonging to AIADMK V. Pattulingam and V. Radhakrishnan pointed out that the attitude of the officials would tarnish the image of the elected representatives in the eyes of the public. As far as planning was concerned, Mr. Rangasamy pointed out that the Corporation officials had made a mockery of the estimates drawn for road improvement works planned in the city.

Mayor Visalakshi Appukutty said the administration would carry out road improvement works at 69 stretches at an outlay of Rs. 29.52 crore.

She said that the sectors left out in the package would be given importance in the next phase of the project.
