Urges district administration to supply Mettur dam water

ERODE: Erode Corporation Councillor Radhamani Bharathi has petitioned the district administration against the quality of water supplied in the city and suggested supply of Mettur dam water.

Displaying a bottle of water supplied in Corporation limits, she said the quality of water supplied was unsatisfactory and the frequency once in two days inadequate. “Though River Cauvery passes through Erode, residents do not get quality water. The supply is only once in two days and that too is uncertain.”

The Councillor said water was available only when the Government opened the shutters of the Stanley Reservoir in Mettur and when it closed the sluices, maintaining supply at 200 cusecs, Erode residents hardly got good water as effluents from textile processing and tanneries mixed with the water. Groundwater table was also down. Government and Erode Corporation were planning to tap the River water at Ooratchikottai barrage, she said and commented that it would not serve any purpose as the water there too was polluted.

“As there are many industries upstream, the water at the barrage is polluted and it gets cleaned only when the Mettur dam shutters are opened.” Pointing out that the Government had devised schemes to take water very long distances, Mr. Bharathi wanted the Government to devise a scheme to supply water from the dam to Erode.

“Keeping in mind the long-term needs of the people of the city and ever-increasing demand for quality water, the Government must come out with a scheme to supply Mettur dam water,” she said.

“Only such a scheme will ensure round-the-year supply.” Pointing out that Mettur was only 50 km away from Erode, she urged the

Government to soon announce a scheme to tap Mettur water.
