Victim was working in a software firm

Corporation employee lost control of the truck while trying to move it to a less busy spot

Solatium of Rs. 50,000 for victim’s family

CHENNAI: A 27-year-old woman was killed when a Chennai Corporation garbage collection truck ran over her at Model School Road in the Thousand Lights atrea here on Tuesday.

Police said the victim, J. Agnes of Tiruchi, working as a human resources executive in a software firm, was walking along the road to office when a Corporation employee, Simpson (28), tried to drive the vehicle to park it in a less busy spot.

He lost control and hit the woman killing her on the spot.

He was taken into custody.

The truck driver had gone to have some tea and snacks when the accident took place.

Simpson, who works in the Corporation’s malaria control programme, was not authorised to drive the truck. Moreover, he did not have a driver’s licence.


Mayor M. Subramanian has ordered the dismissal of Simpson. Vehicle driver Meganathan, who was in charge of the garbage truck, was suspended for dereliction of duty.

The Corporation has also announced a solatium of Rs. 50,000 for the victim’s family.

The civic body has about 1,500 vehicles. The Mayor has warned of action against employees who drive Corporation vehicles without authorisation.

Second accident

This is the second time in less than 10 days that an accident involving a Corporation vehicle has killed a person.

On July 7, a streetlight repair van driver S. Ramamurthy took a wrong lane and ran over a two-wheeler rider in Triplicane. He has been suspended too.
