SALEM: The Salem Corporation has decided to introduce night sweeping for the effective functioning of the solid waste management system in the city.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the Corporation Commissioner A.M. Selvam here on Monday.
The Commissioner said that this would be introduced at places where there is more traffic congestion during the daytime. The other important step the civic administration has planned is to procure 300 pushcarts for the daily waste collection process.
The officials will closely monitor the sanitary works to ensure that all the workers are properly doing their jobs. In addition, the officials will make sure that the garbage in the streets removed every day. The will frequently inspect the garbage collection work in the city. The Commissioner cautioned shopkeepers that severe action would be taken if they were found dumping garbage in the public places, streets, drainage channels and other places.
The shopkeepers and commercial establishments should segregate the waste and handover it to the sanitary workers collecting waste through the garbage collection vehicles.
The sanitary workers would remove the garbage in the morning and evening. The civic administration had also planned to prepare a route map of the waste collection vehicles.
Mr. Selvam also said the civic administration had taken all necessary efforts to control the spread of viral fever.
