Chennai Corporation teachers have started a campaign to improve enrolment in 284 schools of the civic body.

The campaign that was launched on Saturday will cover all neighbourhoods to attract students to Chennai Corporation Schools.

A number of teachers gathered on the Marina on Saturday as part of the campaign. The campaign will cover more than 2,000 slum neighbourhoods and will seek to create awareness among parents on the superior facilities at the schools.

“The number of students came down by 20 per cent in many of the schools last year. Most of the parents do not know about the facilities at Chennai Corporation Schools. The results have improved. But the number of students has decreased,” said a representative of the Corporation School teachers.

“Teams of teachers will visit each neighbourhood to popularise the English medium stream in 122 primary schools. A total of 28 kindergarten schools have also been opened this year in addition to the 25 last year,” said K. Sathyanathan, another teachers’ representative.

Literary figures in Tamil will also be roped in to attract parents and students to Chennai Corporation Schools.

Councillors will also work in each neighbourhood to popularise the schools. “Parents should make optimum use of the facilities and avail of the free education for their children,” said an official of Chennai Corporation.

The number of students is expected to decrease in some of the schools following the relocation of slums in many parts of the city this year.
