Coimbatore Corporation officials, following repeated complaints from the public, on Saturday impounded cattle from Dharman, a resident of TKV Nagar in Ward 38.

According to sources, based on instructions from Mayor S.M. Velusamy and Commissioner G. Latha, who had received petitions in this regard, the officials went to TKV Nagar on Saturday morning and impounded 11 goats and three cows.

The sources said that City Health Officer P. Aruna, Zoo Director K. Asokan and other sanitary officers led the operations.

Mr. Asokan said that the elderly person was rearing the cattle for years together on the platform. He also lived with the animals.

Whenever the Corporation had initiated action in the past, he had paid fine and continued living there, on the platform.

On Saturday too he offered to pay the fine. But the authorities impounded the cattle and took them to the Corporation’s cattle yard on Krishnasamy Road.

The civic body authorities also rescued six young Russell’s vipers from the hut.

To retrieve the animals, the man would have to pay Rs. 5,000 for a cow and Rs. 1,000 for a goat. And he would have to rear them only outside the city limits.
