SALEM: The Salem Corporation has purchased a multi-purpose vehicle for road sweeping and cleaning channels at a cost of Rs. 18 lakhs.

This automated compact vehicle can suck the dust on the road.

The corporation has decided to use it mainly to clean narrow lanes and streets in the city. It will also be used for earth works such as digging in the crowded parts.

"The vehicle will also be utilised for cleaning the heavily silted Tirumanimutharu river and the Vellakuttai Odai. As these channels pass through congested parts of the city, it has become impossible for the civic administration to use big earthmovers to clean the entire length of the channels," officials said.

Training

Engineers from the manufacturer of the vehicle had imparted training to the corporation workers on the vehicle operation. The Corporation Commissioner, T.T. Balsamy said the vehicle would be put into use in a week's time.

It would also be used to sweep important streets in the city initially.

The corporation has been facing difficulties in the areas of garbage clearance and shortage of sanitary workers. Despite efforts, garbage clearing in the city is far from satisfactory, the residents claimed adding that shortage of personnel should not affect important works such as sanitation.

They also urge the immediate need for mechanisation of cleaning the city.

Hence such multi-purpose vehicles, once pressed into service fully, are expected to help the corporation in improving the sanitary conditions.
