Encroachments up to Korattur to be cleared soon

Chennai: Desilting of the Cooum and the construction of bunds along its course in Poonamallee taluk were carried out by the Tiruvallur district administration on Friday.

After clearing encroachments in Thiruverkadu, Veeraraghavapuram and Paruthipattu in the last few days, revenue officials and public works department officials are engaged in building bunds along the river up to Avadi.

The demolition is part of the district administration's drive to ensure easy flow of surplus water in the Cooum and to prevent flooding in surrounding habitations.

One of the biggest encroachments that impeded flow of flood water and led to inundation in nearby areas such as Mogappair was a set of buildings constructed by the Dr. MGR Deemed University.

Encroachments that were demolished in the Poonamallee taluk included a wedding hall, a school, cowshed, a public toilet and a small food processing industry. Cultivation on poramboke lands was also cleared.

The encroachments identified up to Korattur will be cleared in the following days, a revenue official said.

In the Ambattur taluk, all illegal commercial buildings have been cleared.

Huts and two homes for the aged run by a charitable trust were not demolished.
