Vellore Collector P. Sankar has sought the cooperation of the public for the Sixth Economic Census which is currently being undertaken in the district.
According to an official release, the Collector who presided over a meeting of the district monitoring committee at the Collectorate here recently stated that the economic census was necessary for planning and for the purpose of collecting the statistics on the role of various sectors in the country’s economy.
During the economic census, the enumerators would gather details on the production and contribution by various sectors, and the economic activities of registered/unregistered organisations, agricultural and non-agricultural organisations.
G. Krishnan, Additional Director of Statistics (in-charge) said that the objective of the census was to enumerate the organisations engaged in economic activities.
The Corporation Commissioner would be the officer-in-charge of the census in Corporation areas, the Municipal Commissioners in municipalities, and the tahsildars in the rural areas.
A total of 2,275 enumerators and 1,138 superintendents have been appointed for the census work.
The enumerators should conduct the economic census on the basis of the house list and the area map used for the 2011 Population Census, and complete the exercise before the end of June, he said.
The Superintendent of Police, District Revenue Officer, Commissioner of Vellore Corporation, municipal commissioners, town panchayat executive officers and tahsildars participated in the meeting.
