CHENNAI: A wide range of cotton saris in hundreds of colour combinations produced by handloom weavers is now on show at the `Chithirai Collections Exhibition', organised by Cooptex in the city.
Cooptex launched more than 200 designs of cotton saris this summer.
The exotic designs have been named `Chithirai Collections' to synchronise with the Tamil month of Chithirai.
Apart from traditional and contemporary collections of saris for middle-aged women, trendy varieties for youngsters are available at a price affordable to all sections.
Saris woven without intricate designs are available in the Rs.250 to Rs.400 range.
Those with silver thread work and rich pallu of 120 counts are priced around Rs.2,000 a piece.
Saris with innovative designs produced by handloom weavers of Sirumugai, Nagamam, Jayakondam, Tiruchi, Thoppur, Vanavasi, Madurai, Kancheepuram, Coimbatore, Salem and Paramakudi are on sale.
Attractive and aesthetic Kanchi cotton saris, impressive and intricately designed Kovai cotton saris, fascinating Vilathai saris or crisp traditional cotton saris from Paramakudi, Woraiyur and Musiri are available.
It is virtually a one-stop shop for cotton saris manufactured at various handloom centres in the State.
The aim of the sale is to showcase that Cooptex, with hundreds of cooperative societies under its control, has more varieties than private traders, said Cooptex officials.
With fashion changing every day, they selected designs developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology and freelance designers, in addition to prize-winning designs introduced at contests organised by Cooptex for the saris.
Cooptex offered a genuine discount of 20 per cent on all varieties.
The saris are displayed at Cooptex showrooms at Vanavil on Anna Salai and Sastri Nagar near Adyar and Mount up to April 30, the officials said.
