SALEM: The Railways has begun the conversion of metre gauge track in Salem Railway Junction into broad gauge.

The metre gauge track was earlier used for the train services operated between Salem and Viridhachalam.

The Railways had recently completed the gauge conversion work between the two towns.

As a result, the authorities had decided to convert the metre gauge track in the junction too.

A team of workers had already removed the metre gauge track and demolished the existing platform.

New platform

Officials said that the Railways would construct a new platform with all passenger amenities.

The work was taken up as part of various improvements being carried out in the junction. Sources said that the gauge conversion would enable the Railways to extend better service to the people. The work would be completed quickly.
