SALEM: Consumers and farmers have urged the State Government to equip the Sooramangalam Uzhavar Santhai (farmers’ market) with electronic scales to ensure greater transparency in the weighing process.
Consumers say that arguments break out very often in the market over the weighing process. Many people complain about the accuracy of scales being used in the market currently.
The Government has provided electronic scales to the newly-established market in Hasthampatti. But the officials are causing inordinate delay in providing electronic scales to the Sooramangalam market, consumers complain. The Sooramangalam market gets an average of 4,500 consumers a day. The figure crosses 7,000 during the weekends and festivals. Over 220 farmers from various parts of the district bring their produce. About 30 to 35 tonnes of vegetables and fruits are being sold in the market in a day. Officials said that steps were being taken up to equip the market with electronic scales.
