Coimbatore: Over 400 construction workers affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) took out a rally from Race Course and staged a demonstration in front of Red Cross Society on Monday seeking better social security.

The demonstrators, including large number of women, urged for solatium in the event of death, the monthly pension should be hiked from the present Rs. 400 to Rs. 1500 and increase in marriage assistance.

A demonstration was also staged in Tirupur.

AITUC district general secretary N. Sekhar said the Government should take steps to increase the solatium given to the kin of the workers who died in accidents from Rs. one lakh to Rs. five lakh.

Similarly, the relief given to workers who die under natural circumstances should be increased from Rs. 17,000 to Rs. 3 lakh.

Corporation councillor P. R. Natarajan and senior AITUC leaders spoke.
