TIRUNELVELI: Minister for Environment, Youth Welfare and Sports T.P.M. Mohideen Khan on Saturday formally inaugurated the construction of a mini stadium to come up at Melapalayam near here on an outlay of Rs. 50 lakh. The facility, to be established on 6.01 acres of land near Karunkulam, will have 400-metre athletic track, volleyball, basketball, kabaddi and kho-kho courts, football and hockey grounds, restroom for players, gallery to accommodate 2,000 spectators etc. When Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited the district recently, he laid foundation stone for this sports complex at a function held at Ambasamudram. While Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) has released Rs. 22.50 lakh, Mr. Mohideen Khan has allotted Rs. 10 lakh from his Constituency Development Fund and a similar sum was released by the Member Secretary, SDAT. “The concrete basketball court will have floodlights and we are trying to get the same facility for the volleyball court also,” said District Sports Officer K. Xavier Jothi Sargunam, adding that the soil in the 6.01 acres of land was conducive for sports activities. Since this upcoming stadium was located 1.40 km from the Tirunelveli - Nagercoil National Highway (through a westbound gravel road opposite CSI Jayaraj Annapackiyam Higher Secondary School) and 1.10 km from Palayamkottai-Ambasamudram main road, the sports arena, to be completed within three months, would have a good patronage. Collector M. Jayaraman, MPs S.S. Ramasubbu and S. Thangavelu, PWD Executive Engineer Rajagopal, volleyball coach Senthur Pandian and swimming coach Prem Kumar were present.
