One lakh postcards to be mailed to PM to press the demand
The joint committee of various farmers’ associations of the State has appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to constitute the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Regulation Committee within 90 days of gazetting of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal’s Final Award. This was one of the resolutions passed at a meeting held here on Friday in which several leaders of farmers’ associations took part. The resolution also said that one lakh postcards would be mailed to the Prime Minister to press this demand.
The meeting congratulated Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for making the Central government gazette the award.
It sought cooperation and support of the entire farming community for the endeavour of the Chief Minister for the constitution of the Cauvery Regulation Committee.
Another important resolution passed at the meeting was to launch a campaign to enlighten the people on the predicament of the people of Tamil Nadu because of the recalcitrance of Karnataka to release water in the Cauvery.
It pointed out that the level in Mettur reservoir had been plunging almost every day and all the rivers, canals and tanks in the State remained parched. This would result in total loss of water for agriculture.
As groundwater level was plummeting, the situation would come to such a pass that Tamil Nadu would not have water even for drinking, it lamented. G. Kanagasabhai, State president of Cauvery Delta Farmers’ Welfare Association, presided.
