Fifteen persons, including a police constable, were arrested for creating nuisance during the procession of Lord Kallazhagar on Thursday night.
A quarrel erupted when the devotees sprayed water on the devotees people on Kamarajar Salai. The city police arrested nine persons, including M. Dhavamuniyandi (35) of Virattipathu.
He is a constable attached to the 8th Battalion of Tamil Nadu Special Police in New Delhi.
They were remanded in judicial custody on Friday.
In other incidents during the Chithirai festival, the Madurai rural police arrested six persons on charges of picking up quarrels with the public in an inebriated state and eve-teasing.
In a statement, Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan said 35 mischief mongers were detained and let off after a severe warning.
Women lose chains
In different incidents reported in the city, three women lost their gold chains on Thursday. S.Gomathi (60) of Iravathanallur lost her 10-soverign chain and K.Saratha (35) of Tirupuvanam lost her 3-sovereign chain when they took part in the Lord Kallazhagar procession in Puliyanthope near Mathichayam.
An unidentified person snatched a 11-sovereign chain from B.Girija (49) of Gnanavel East Street near Teppakulam.
The woman was walking back home after shopping when the culprit snatched her chain and fled in a motorcycle.
