Udhagamandalam: Due importance has been given to the Nilgiris in the constitution of a Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel.

In keeping with an assurance made by the Union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh at Kotagiri near here a couple of weeks ago an announcement was made by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests on Thursday that an expert panel on Western Ghats has been established.

In the 14-member panel chaired by the Ex-Chairman, Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science Madhav Gadgil, the senior advocate and noted conservationist of the Nilgiris B.J.Krishnan have been included.

He is the only non-official member from Tamil Nadu.

A veteran in the Save Western Ghats Movement, Mr.Krishnan was in the forefront of the famous Save Western Ghats March (SWGM) of the 1980s which helped bring into sharp focus the unique Sahyadris (Western Ghats).

The expert panel which has been constituted for a period of one year will recommend measures.
