Collector Ajay Yadav inaugurated the connectivity scheme for nutritious meal centres by distributing Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) SIM cards to nutritious meal scheme (NMS) organisers at the rate of one organiser for each of the 20 panchayat unions in Vellore district at a function got up here on Monday.

Under the scheme, also known as the BSNL special cell phone scheme, SIM cards worth Rs.6,48,450 are to be given to 2,310 nutritious meal scheme organisers working in the nutritious meal centres in elementary schools, middle schools and high schools in 20 panchayat unions, one Corporation and eight municipalities, deputy block development officers (NMS), and the officials of the NMS wing of the Collectorate.

According to a release from the District Information and Public Relations Office, the scheme would facilitate 24-hour exchange of information on the execution of the nutritious meal scheme by Group ‘C' and ‘D' workers, monitoring of the functioning of NMS centres through computerisation of details such as daily attendance of the staff, number of children who partook the meal, menu, quantity of food served, stocks of vegetables and eggs, supply of vegetables and eggs to the centres and the distribution of eggs to the children. This, it is felt, would facilitate the implementation of the scheme in an exemplary manner by enabling NMS organisers to communicate their problems to higher officials and the latter to solve the problems immediately. Under the scheme, the beneficiaries could send 100 SMS messages free of cost for each connection.
