Mani Shankar Aiyar will enter the fray in Mayiladuthurai for the seventh time

T.Krishnasamy Vandayar, who has been nominated by the Congress for the Thanjavur Lok Sabha seat, hails from a traditional Congress family.

He is the son of K.Thulasiah Vandayar, former MP of Thanjavur and secretary and correspondent of AVVM Sri Pushpam College at Poondi near Thanjavur.

Mr.Krishnasamy Vandayar is a B.Tech graduate in Chemical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi.

His grandfather A.Krishnasamy Vandayar had served as an MLC in Madras Presidency and was a close associate of K.Kamaraj, and R.Venkatraman, former President of India. Mr.Krishnasamy Vandayar senior and his brother A.Veeraiya Vandayar started the Sri Pushpam College in 1956.

The junior Krishnasamy Vandayar served as general secretary of the State congress committee trade wing in 2000. He also served as State vice-president of Seva Dal and as TNCC special invitee for the All India Congress Committee from 2001-2005.

He was president of the Thanjavur District Congress Committee from 2000-03. He is a trade union leader and took part in various agitations over Cauvery issue.

Mani Shankar Aiyar, the Congress candidate for Mayiladuthurai Lok Sabha constituency, will be in the fray for the record seventh time in a row. Mr.Aiyar, a senior leader of the party and a close associate of late Rajiv Gandhi, was first fielded by the party in 1991 and since then he has been a regular here. He won in 1991, 1999, and 2004 and served as Union Minister in different regimes. He is at present Rajya Sabha member nominated by the President of India.

In the 2009 election, Mr.Aiyar lost to All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s O.S. Manian. However, he was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the President of India in 2010. Mr. Aiyar who was an aspirant for this seat, has already commenced his campaign.

M.Rajasekaran, who has been nominated for the Perambalur constituency, is a former MLA. The Congress last fielded its candidate in this seat in 1998. Mr.Rajasekaran, at present president of the Tiruchi north district unit of the party, represented the erstwhile Thottiyam constituency in the State Assembly from 2006-11.

In the 2011 election he unsuccessfully contested from Musiri Assembly constituency. This is his maiden attempt in the Lok Sabha election. The party has fielded a new face, A.P.Senthil Pandian, in Nagapattinam (Reserved) constituency. Hailing from Tazhaikudi village in Tiruvarur district, Mr. Pandian is a civil engineering graduate.

He held the post of district secretary of the Youth Congress for some time. S.Tirunavukkarasar, former Union Minister, who has been fielded in Ramanathapuram constituency, hails from Aranthangi in Pudukottai district.
