Has the government issued any instructions to the Madurai police asking them to take prompt action in complaints related to sexual violence? This was one of the questions posed by the RTI applicant, S. Varadarajan, to the police department. But the answers he received from various police officers were baffling. Some of them answered in the affirmative, some in the negative, and some chose to say that they do not know.

While the Public Information Officer of Madurai city police said that no such instructions had been issued by the government to the Commissioner of Police between 2008 and 2012, the Deputy Superintendents of Police of Tirupparankundram and Usilampatti said that they did not know whether such instructions had been issued to the Superintendent of Police. The DSPs of other sub-divisions asked the applicant to approach the SP’s office for an answer.

The only officer to state that such instructions had been issued was the Samayanallur DSP but he did not provide a photocopy of it as sought for by the RTI applicant.
