The department of psychology, Institute of Distance Education, University of Madras, organised a three-day international conference on ‘Child and Women’s Mental Health’ recently.

D. Shantharam, vice-chancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, inaugurated the conference and said economic independence, sexual safety and mental health should be addressed from school onwards.

Eleven leading doctors from various specialties presented papers on various aspects of children’s and women’s health. Recent advances in psychology were also touched upon.

Other participants included Gita Arjun, gynaecologist, Peter Satchell of the British Council, S. Thenmozhi of the psychology department, and R. Thandavan, university vice-chancellor.
