: The Madras High Court has granted conditional bail to Leema Rose, wife of lottery baron S. Martin, who was arrested in a case for alleged offences including cheating, conspiracy and forgery.

Justice R. Subbiah granted the relief on a petition by Mrs.Rose.

The prosecution case was that during a search of the house of M.Nagarajan at Nanganallur here, Rs.7.20 crore was recovered along with records relating to transport of lottery tickets to West Bengal, Bhutan and Sikkim. A search of the house of G. Moorthy at Annanagar yielded Rs.50 lakh. The cash was seized. Interrogation revealed that Nagarajan sold lottery tickets of other States in Tamil Nadu. Nearly 3,625 lottery tickets were seized. The allegation was that the petitioner colluded with the other two accused and fabricated documents to obtain bail for her husband, who was an accused. She made arrangements along with other accused to convert the ill-gotten money into white money and tried to cheat the government.

Counsel said the petitioner had been falsely implicated in the case.

Mr.Justice Subbiah said the petitioner had been in jail for more than a month. There was no need for her custodial interrogation.

He ordered that she be released on bail on executing a bond for Rs.10,000 with two sureties for a like sum. She should appear before the City Central Crime Branch daily for four weeks and thereafter as and when required.
