Following directive by the High Court to assess the damage caused

Udhagamandalam: An ad-hoc committee on Tuesday commenced work on assessing the damages caused by illegal quarrying in the Nilgiris district.

The committee comprises the Principal Secretary, Industries, M.F.Farooqui, the Principal Secretary, Revenue Ambuj Sharma, the Government Advocate, High Court, Manishankar and senior geologist from New Delhi Sridhar Ramamoorthy.

The visit of the committee follows a recent directive of the High Court to assess the damages and also transfer to the CB CID all the criminal cases relating to illegal quarrying in the Nilgiris.

After discussions with officials including the Nilgiris Collector Anandrao V.Patil, the members received petitions from the public.

The petitioners urged the committee to display impartiality in the matter and initiate appropriate action against those including officials who had facilitated illegal quarrying.

Later, Mr.Farooqui told presspersons that the team would carry out its brief relating to illegal quarrying in patta and revenue lands and submit a report to the court.

The members inspected quarries at Neethi and Ekoni.
