Tiruvannamalai: Food Minister E.V. Velu distributed free colour TV sets to as many as 1,919 families in Mazhayur and Nedungunam villages of Vandavasi taluk at two different functions on Saturday.

Mr. Velu also distributed Muvalur Ramamirtham Ammayar Memorial Marriage assistance to 167 women in the two villages.

Speaking at the functions, Mr. Velu said that in order to sustain the Re.1 per kilo rice scheme, the government of Tamil Nadu has sanctioned Rs.4,000 crore as food subsidy this year.

“The Chief Minister initially announced that those who resided in government ‘poromboke' lands for the minimum ten years could be provided with the ‘patta' for that particular land.

Later, he relaxed the norm to five years. Tiruvannamalai district is leading in distributing most number of free house site pattas to people among other districts of the State,” he said.
