College youth belt it out at NXg Rockstar

The decibel hit the roof at the finals of NXg Rockstar that took place at IIT-Madras on Friday.

The third edition of the inter-collegiate western music competition, held in association with Saarang 2013, hosted bands from colleges across the State. At stake was the top prize of Rs. 50,000 besides other prizes.

On Thursday, day one of the competition, the preliminary and final rounds of the acoustics and accapella categories were held. The 24 participating bands were judged by Saroop Oommen of Unwind Center and Melvin Ranjan of Musee Musicals.

Indie band F 16’s were adjudged the best acoustic band and awarded a cash prize of Rs. 15,000. In the acapella category, the girls from Stella Maris’ Western Music Club claimed the top spot and a cash prize of Rs. 15,000.

On day two, Friday, six amateur rock bands made it to the finals.

Popular guitarist Ed Degenaro and Parikrama band members Saurabh Choudhary and Gaurav Balani were the judges.

Three-member band Glue won top honours in the Best Own Composition category and was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 50,000. Coming in at a close second and third were Two Decades and After and Drift, who won Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 20,000, respectively.

NXg Rockstar also featured a high-octane performance by Pyjama Conspiracy who opened the act for one of India’s biggest rock bands — Parikrama.

The title sponsor of the event was Otto, associate sponsor was Hyundai, multiplex partner was Inox, radio partner was Hello FM, gift partners were B3 and Fitness One, and event partner was iAds & Events
