Hundreds of units have come up in the district for polishing granite blocks brought in illegally from within and outside the State, District Collector C.N. Maheshwaran has said. He warned the units of the illegal procurement and possession of the granite blocks, and said stringent action would be taken against them. The district administration had received complaints that the granite blocks were being moved out of the quarries without paying necessary charges, the Collector said. Many vehicles transporting granite blocks illegally had been caught and fined by the authorities, he said. Hence, receiving granite blocks without any valid documents and polishing the same is illegal as per the rules. To put an end to this kind of illegal movement of granite blocks, officials from various departments were asked to conduct surprise raids in polishing industries. The polishing industries should show valid documents for the granite blocks in their possession.
