Collector C. Rajendran has appealed to the local body chiefs and members, government officials, teachers, representatives of non-governmental organisations, the Tamils, educated people and the general public to celebrate ‘Pongal' and Tamil New Year's Day by beautifying and decorating buildings, houses and parks with serial lights in deference to the appeal made by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

In a release, the Collector requested people to celebrate the festival by organising ‘kolam' competitions and games displaying bravery for children, women and youth.

Holiday with wages

Mr. Rajendran has issued an order directing the managements of all shops and industrial establishments in Vellore district to grant holiday with wages to workers in Vellore district on January 15 in connection with the celebration of Pongal and Tamil New Year's Day, under the Tamil Nadu Industrial Establishments (National and Festival Holidays) Act 1958.
