Collector M. Mathivanan on Monday visited the hamlets in Dharapuram revenue division from where people have been frequently raising fear of experiencing ‘tremors' since an earthquake of mild intensity occurred in the region about 10 days ago.

The Collector's visit was primarily to dispel the fear of the public in Dharapuram and Kangeyam taluks.

No recording

Though the residents of Manalur and Orathupalayam hamlets complained of experiencing ‘tremors' on Sunday night, the meteorological department had categorically ruled out occurrence of any quake in the region.

Mr. Mathivanan told the residents to stay calm as there had been no recording of earthquakes subsequent to the one registered with the epicenter located at 11.0 degree north (latitude) and 77.6 degree east (longitude), which is near Dharapuram, about 10 days ago.

Quarries

A section of residents complained that some stone quarries had been functioning in the region and probably the explosions there might have been triggering the ‘tremors' experienced.

The revenue officials, who were present, assured the public that the departments concerned would be asked to look into the operations of the quarries also.
