MADURAI: The Madras High Court Bench here on Thursday directed the Tiruchi Collector to convene a peace committee meeting between the elders of the Dalit community and Caste Hindus of Alampatti Pudur in Srirangam Taluk for finding an amicable solution to allegations of discrimination and abuse of Dalits.

Disposing of a public interest litigation petition filed by a 30-year-old Dalit woman from the village, a Division Bench, comprising Justices F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla and K.B.K. Vasuki, said the animosity between the communities could not be solved by providing police protection to the Dalits as sought for by the petitioner. It could be solved only through talks.

“We will appreciate if the District Collector takes steps to convene the meeting within 15 days from the date of receipt of the copy of this order in order to ensure a congenial and peaceful atmosphere.”

Petitioner C. Malliga stated that her brother-in-law was abused and assaulted by a Caste Hindu on December 21, 2009.
