Collector T. Munusamy has warned the people of stringent action who attempt to encroach upon water bodies.

At the monthly farmers’ grievances day meeting here on Friday, the Collector said that the Chief Minister has ordered setting up maximum number of farm ponds in the delta districts. Orders have been issued for clearing silt in the rivers, supply channels, and canals. The Collector said that steps would be taken to restrict the conversion of agricultural lands into housing plots.

The State government has initiated measures, including drought resistant technologies, laying PVC pipes from ponds and tanks for supply of water, diesel subsidy, three-phase power supply, payment of entire premium for insurance and compensation, and setting up of the high level committee. He said that farmers’ festival has been planned in all the 523 revenue villages in the district. Agriculture department officials have been directed to test the soil fertility in all the villages. The farmers have been given information on using the latest technologies in farm operations.
