As part of the United Nations Day celebrations, District Collector R. Palanisamy hoisted the UN flag, alongside the National Flag, on the Collectorate building here on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that the U.N. had been playing a mediatory role to bring about good relations between the warring nations, to mitigate problems arising out of civil strife, and to promote peace and harmony among the comity of nations. Hence, October 24 being observed as the U.N. Day, deserved to be celebrated as a joyous occasion. He pointed out that India had secured the support of 188 of the 192 member-countries to recently attain the status of the Asian regional representative to the UN Security Council.
The Collector saw it as a precursor to India becoming a permanent member of the UN Security Council. District Revenue Officer N. Venkatachalam, Public Relations Officers M. Palanisamy and others were present on the occasion.
