District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan called on an ailing 91-year-old freedom fighter Ramaiah Rathinam Pillai at a city hospital on Saturday.

An Indian National Army veteran, Mr.Pillai had been residing at Nanganallur in Kancheepuram district but had moved to the city a couple of years back to live with his eldest son Sukumar, employed with a bank near Musiri. Over the last two years he was felicitated during the Republic Day celebrations in the city. Noticing his absence at the Republic Day celebrations, when freedom fighters are usually honoured, Ms.Muralidharan had enquired about his wellbeing and was told that he was ailing. In a follow up, she called on Mr.Pillai at the hospital to enquire about his health with the doctors and family members on Saturday. Mr.Pillai’s wife Neelavathi and Vijayakumar Rathinam were present, according to a press release from the district administration.
