Coimbatore: The high-security Coimbatore Central Prison has been equipped with gadgets that can detect the use of mobile phones.

Costing Rs.1.5 lakh, the hand-held gadgets are similar in size and appearance of a walke-talkie, DIG of Prisons, Coimbatore, P. Munivelu said. It could be kept in pockets.

All security personnel had to do was to just walk around the prison. If anybody made a call or received one, the gadgets would alert them.

The gadgets would be installed at the prison’s entry point, visitors’ area and across the prison.

Signal jammer

The Central Prison here has a cell phone signal jammer. Prison sources said several measures were being initiated to ensure that mobile phones and Subscriber Identification Modules never found their way into the prison.

Banned items

Mobile phones are banned items as per the jail manual. Prisoners and their visitors often adopt ingenious methods to sneak in slim handsets and SIM cards.
