‘Many phone calls received'
Officials at the Election Cell of the District Police Office said that a total of 33 cases of violation of the model code of conduct have been booked across the district till Sunday. This was the same figure the officials gave when they were asked about five days ago.
A police official said that they had been involved in a host of other activities related to election.
The District Collector, who is the Election Officer, said that they received many phone calls relating to alleged code violation and forwarded them to the returning officers and the concerned police stations.
“But many such incidents could not be registered as cases because miscreants claimed to be involved in such acts managed to flee from the place before the officials reached the spot,” he added. Talking about the number of cases booked on candidates violating the code, the Collector said that cases were booked only after the police got clear-cut proof of those violations.
Some residents of Namakkal Municipality told The Hindu that they had informed the Returning Officer about the code violation by a few candidates. They used blaring cone speakers tied to autorickshaws for campaigning, but those complaints did not yield any results, they added.
On Sunday also such autorickshaws could be found campaigning at ward number 30 in the municipality.
