Chief Minister Jayalalithaa will inaugurate the 30 MW Barrage II of Bhavani Kattalai hydro-electric power generation project at Vendipalayam here through video-conferencing on Tuesday.

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has completed the project and carried out all testing procedures.

The barrage, constructed across Cauvery River, is one of the major power generation projects taken up by TANGEDCO in this part of the State.

The Corporation has allotted Rs. 400 crore for the project initially.

Later, the total cost of the project was revised to Rs. 497 crore. Two power generation units, each with a capacity of 15 MW, have been installed in the barrage.

The construction of the barrage began in February 2006 and the Corporation had planned to complete the works in 36 months.

But it was delayed at various stages of implementation owing to different reasons.

Apart from power generation, the barrage will also provide better road connectivity between Erode and Namakkal districts.

The two-lane road built on top of the barrage will enable vehicle users to travel between the two districts with ease.

The Chief Minister will also declare open a new maternity hospital constructed at a cost of Rs. 2.93 crore in Erode.

She will also inaugurate a bus stand meant for mini buses, a parking facility and a sanitary complex built at a cost of Rs. 4.10 crore.
