Though news of monsoon is comforting, water position causes concern
COIMBATORE: The news of the onset of the South West Monsoon over Kerala has raised hopes of the Siruvani drinking water position improving in Coimbatore.
With the Siruvani Dam located close to the Mannarkad area in the Palakkad District of Kerala, its filling up totally hinges on the amount of rain that region gets.
A cloud cover and drizzle over the last few days is lending comfort to the local bodies in Coimbatore, especially the Coimbatore Corporation.
Though rain has been in the range of only 3 mm to 4 mm in the last four to five days, the fact that even this is happening in the last week of May is heartening for the local bodies.
Sources in the Coimbatore Corporation, however, react with cautious optimism.
Things will look certain only when the monsoon sets in over this region fully and turns vigorous.
It has been a close shave for the Corporation this year because of the monsoon being far below expectations last year.
Actually, only the news of the monsoon is comforting and not the present water position.
From 26 ft on May 24, as against the full reservoir level of 67 ft, the water level has come down to 23 ft on Wednesday (May 27).
A three-foot reduction closer to the dam bed in three days is certainly not good news for the city and the suburbs.
Water managers in the Corporation said that the Pilloor drinking water scheme has been restored in the city after last week’s pipeline burst.
