The town wing of the Democratic Youth Federation of India has urged the municipal administration to take immediate steps to close the pits dug up for maintenance of underground drainage channels.
In a petition to the municipal commissioner on Monday, the federation has said that the municipality, as part of maintenance of the underground drainage channels set up during the Pudukottai Samasthanam era, has dug out a few trenches at a few places between Anna statue and Chinnappa park area.
The pits should have been properly covered with concrete slabs after clearing the choked sewer lines of the old drainage channels.
The unclosed pits pose a serious health hazard to residents. The possibility of children falling into the pit could not be ruled out, the petition said, pleading for urgent action in this regard.
