Dharmapuri: The District Backward Classes Department has disbursed scholarship to the tune of Rs. 30.92 lakh to 17,513 students in Dharmapuri district so far. The district administration has taken efforts to disburse scholarships to all eligible students on a war-footing, Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal has said.
Speaking at a review meeting at the Collectorate here on Thursday, the Collector said that of the total amount, Rs. 9.44 lakh was disbursed as scholarship to 6,497 students belonging to backward classes, Rs. 20.73 lakh as assistance to 10,918 students belonging to most backward classes and Rs. 74,000 was disbursed to 78 girl children. He said that the girl child programme was being implemented on a priority basis.
The Collector directed the officials concerned to speed up disbursement of scholarships to all eligible students in the district. The district administration will construct classrooms under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in schools with poor infrastructure facilities. About four acres of land had been acquired from the Department of Forests for construction of a middle school in Sitling hamlet in Harur taluk.
The district administration had identified lands for construction of 40 primary schools. Efforts would be made to construct toilets in all the schools under the Total Sanitation Programme. The Government had allocated funds for construction of toilets in 807 government schools in the district. Using the fund, toilets had been constructed in 461 schools.
The administration had issued community certificates to 1,452 students belonging to backward classes. He directed the officials of Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board to provide drinking water facility in Pulikarai Government Higher Secondary School and Thoppur backward classes hostel.
